Topic: The Reality of Virtual and Augmented Reality as Immersive Storytelling Media

Speaker: Barry Sandrew, Ph.D., Founder, Legend3D

Topic Overview:

Over the past three decades, the act of modifying iconic public domain films via colorization and the altering of new released feature films via 3D conversion have met with mixed reactions from movie going audiences and the creative community. Barry Sandrew, Ph.D. original inventor of the digital colorization process used on more than 375 public domain films, over 90 animated cartoons and hundreds of TV episodes and inventor of the core 3D conversion technology that has been employed on over 30 of the highest box-office performing feature films of the past 6 years will discuss the genesis and evolution of those conversion industries.

Barry Sandrew will go on to assess the emergence of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality in Hollywood, discussing whether they’ll likely evolve into the next generation of storytelling technology or prove to be the entertainment industry’s next innovation bubble. He’ll draw parallels between these new media distribution platforms and both the successes and failures of the 3D industry, pointing out which immersive media has the greatest chance to survive as a storytelling medium attracting the broadest audience demographics

Barry Sandrew, Ph.D is an internationally recognized entrepreneur, digital imaging expert and a visual effects pioneer with over 24 patents and 25 years of feature film and TV accomplishments including productions for all 6 major Hollywood studios and 3 major networks. Dr. Sandrew is founder of 2 production studios that became gold standards for color visual effects. In 2000 he established and continues to remotely manage one of the first, longest operating and largest VFX studios in India.

In 1987 Sandrew invented digital colorization. Between 1987 and 1993, he colorized over 250 films, 180 TV episodes and 70 cartoons. He also produced all color, compositing and special effects for Spielberg’s first digital animated feature, We’re Back, A Dinosaur Story, Gahan Wilson’s animated short, The Diner, the Fox TV series, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, as well as restoration and color visual effects for the ABC miniseries, War and Remembrance and the John Lennon documentary, Imagine.
